Traveling Long Distance With Kids in the Car

Taking a road trip can be one of the most pleasurable things to do as you take in all of the sights and feel free as you head down the open road. However, when you add kids into the mix, taking a road trip may not be as relaxing if you don’t properly prepare for it. If you are looking to go on a long-distance drive with your little ones, here are some tips that may help the ride go as smoothly as possible.

Take Breaks

Riding for long periods of time can be annoying for almost anyone, so for a kid, sitting for such long periods of time can be virtually unbearable. The best way to make a long drive bearable and enjoyable for you and the kids is to break the drive up into segments. If you are driving a very long distance, then you probably shouldn’t try to cram all of the trips into one day. Driving just a few hours each day will not only prevent your children from getting so antsy while riding, but it will also allow you to thoroughly recharge for the next leg of the trip.

Keep Them Entertained

Kids can get bored pretty easily, which means that they will most likely look for entertainment by any means necessary. This may mean having to constantly yell “stop, no, don’t do that,” and having to constantly look over your shoulder at the backseat. Please remember that distracted driving is highly dangerous and that you shouldn’t let yourself look away for even a moment if you can help it. You want to keep your kids entertained by giving them lots of safe toys to play with so that you can fully concentrate on the road. If possible, choose games that do not require any internet access or that do not have to be charged. This way, you don’t have to deal with the crying and screaming that may occur if the tablet dies in the middle of your child’s game. Having a nice, comfy blanket for your kids to snuggle underneath once they’ve worn themselves out is a great idea as well.

Bring Snacks

It doesn’t take too much to make a child happy, and outside of toys, snacks are another easy way to satisfy them. Food is not only tasty, but it is also a little time consuming as well and a great way to keep your kids distracted and quiet during a long road trip. Kids can’t yell and scream with a mouth full of food, so if nothing else, snack time can help you get a few moments of peace and quiet. Healthy snacks, such as carrots, raisins, et cetera, are not only fun to eat but are also easier to clean up and easy to make!

Being as prepared as possible is the best way to handle taking a road trip with little ones. Having plenty of extra food, water, and blankets can make all the difference between a fun road trip and a road trip from hell.
