Top Tips for Families Visiting the Alamo

Visit the pride and joy of Texas with a trip to the legendary Alamo. This historical site memorializes what it means to be a Texan. As the site of one of the most famous battles on American soil, a trip to The Alamo will both entertain and educate. Here are three tips for families getting ready to head out on an adventure to The Alamo.

When to Go

Approximately 2.5 million people visit The Alamo each year, making it one of the most visited attractions in the state of Texas. The peak season for The Alamo begins at the end of May and continues through Labor Day Weekend. Traveling during the off-season will yield fewer crowds, allowing you to move around more freely and experience all that the site has to offer its guests. As a bonus, you will also enjoy better weather conditions. The attraction is open every day of the year with the exception of Christmas Day. While there is no charge to visit The Alamo, visitors are encouraged to leave a donation to help to maintain the grounds and exhibits.

Getting There

If your main goal while in San Antonio is to visit The Alamo, you would be wise to stay in the River Walk area. Not only will this put you in the heart of San Antonio, but you will also be located within walking distance of The Alamo. If you want to drive to the site, the closest lots are the Crockett Lot located at 824 E. Houston and the Riverbend Garage. From either of these lots, it is a short stroll to the grounds of The Alamo. While you should avoid some intersections, San Antonio is pretty easy to get around.

What to See

Many visitors arrive at The Alamo expecting to only see the famous shrine and then be done with the trip. However, there is so much more to enjoy with a visit to The Alamo in addition to its iconic church and lush grounds. The Long Barrack is the oldest building in San Antonio, making it a highlight of a visit to The Alamo. An interactive exhibit allows you to leave a message with your thoughts on this historical destination to share with other visitors.

Make the most out of your trip to The Alamo by knowing when to visit and what to prioritize on your journey. This step back in time will truly leave a big impression on you and your family.
